why i don’t want you to feel sorry for me on mother’s day, my first without mom.

I understand being sensitive towards someone you know might be going through it, but I implore you to stop falling into the cracks of political correctness. I’ve been skeptical about writing this post because the last thing I want is to bring someone down who is already grieving. But let me be clear, this post is mostly directed towards you who are not.

If you can take anything from reading this, I want you to go all out and celebrate with the loudest bells and whistles you could find! I know I would if mom was still here and my only hope this year is for you to have that moment with yours. We don’t know the day of our departure, so I implore you, celebrate like it’s the last Mother’s Day you’ll have with her.

How to Travel Light in a Heavy World: Wisdom and Worldly Success

I told myself in order to be successful, I had to be perfect.

But that was a lie. In order to be successful, I must be wise.

Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc, Friends) once said,

When the package is this pretty, no one cares what’s inside.

I know one person who cares.

His name is Jesus.

How to Travel Light in a Heavy World: Wisdom Works with Humility

When we’ve been left astray with life’s disappointments, humility will not demand an apology when we’ve been wronged, but will meekly guide us to forgive in obedience to the economy of love. If we allow Mother Wisdom’s compass to direct us through the path of humility, then we will be taken to new and exciting places we had missed if we continued down the same road of pride and arrogance.

How to Travel Light in a Heavy World: Wisdom Requires Faith

When we take a step of faith, we are not uneducated about the condition of our situation. Our faith comes from practice, not from an arbitrary event.

If wisdom is the vessel to our final destination, then faith is the fuel which ignites our passion for eternity.

How to Travel Light in a Heavy World: Wisdom is Free

As a self-proclaimed foodie, one of my preferred ways to travel is on a large and luxurious cruise ship because we consume all of this “free food.” I mean, who doesn’t love a free frozen treat after a long day spent exploring the hot and humid Caribbean islands? Then there’s the hard-working crew who are often the friendliest and sweetest people you will ever meet. They will make you feel like royalty for every dinner, particularly on those nights we get to wear our formal attire.

The Art of Traveling Light

When we travel, we may have packed a sedative to calm our anxiety. A sedative may be a temporary solution to relieve us from our nerves and our pain, but God wants us to seek something a lot more permanent to cure our wounds. Instead of numbing our pain, we should be praying for a more long-term solution, for wisdom to enter our hearts (Proverbs 2:10).

questi sono i nostri ricordi: these are our souvenirs

As my feelings of nostalgia deepened, I couldn’t stop thinking about the disciples after losing Jesus to the cross. Confusion, disbelief, perhaps even deception? They probably wondered if they had just woken up from a long dream and if the years of ministry were nothing but an illusion. Despite their imperfections, they loved Jesus and they knew they were unconditionally loved by Him. But Jesus was …gone? Did they doubt? Were they disillusioned that their time with Him was over?

fading west: where i belong

Finding inspiration can be the beginning of something great that only God can use for the sole purpose of expanding His kingdom. He created us with different gifts so that we could be the blessing others can experience as we live in the here and now. God had used Switchfoot to further my search of Him; their songs have carried a tune in my hopes, my fears, my dreams, my joys, and my sorrows. Through their songs, I have experienced both laughter and tears in my journey of faith.

day one: patience is a virtue

We have been looking forward to this trip for about a month now, and to be finally here blows our minds away! The funny thing is: we almost didn’t make it!

Kenny worked a full 7 day week, so between being tired and the anticipation of coming here didn’t help him sleep last night. We set our alarms at 5:30am, but we snoozed another 15 minutes. Our flight was at 7:15am; we got to the airport at 6:50am. The gentleman at the Delta kiosk told us our luggage might not make it on this trip and told us to run to the gate because they were done boarding. So we ran like gazelles and apparently, so did our luggage. I was so relieved and so thankful by the airline for being so PATIENT , but who knew they would be teaching us a lesson today.
